IQOS, a heat-not-burn tobacco product introduced by Philip Morris International (PMI), has rapidly gained prominence since its launch. This device, designed to work with specially manufactured HEETS tobacco sticks, offers a different experience than traditional smoking methods like cigarettes from Marlboro, Camel, or Winston. By heating instead of burning tobacco, IQOS reportedly reduces the emission of harmful chemicals associated with combustion. As the awareness and concern about the health risks of smoking conventional cigarettes have grown, so has the search for less harmful alternatives. Furthermore, research acknowledges that while levels of specific harmful chemicals are lower in IQOS aerosol than in cigarette smoke, they are still substantially higher than in non-smokers. This suggests that while switching to IQOS might reduce certain health risks associated with smoking, it doesn’t eliminate them.
Another critical aspect to consider is the long-term health effects of IQOS, which remain largely unknown due to the product’s relatively recent introduction. More longitudinal studies are needed to assess these long-term implications accurately.
It’s also worth mentioning that switching to IQOS could potentially have indirect health implications. For instance, if IQOS is perceived as a less harmful alternative, it may lead current smokers who would otherwise quit to continue their nicotine consumption.
